Ski Club of Ireland, Nursery Slopes

    Project Summary

The project entailed civil works remodelling of the existing nursery slopes at the Ski Club of Ireland in Kilternan to create larger, newly graded slopes and installation of two new novice-friendly travellator lifts, one per slope.

Located one above the other the two slopes were designed to work separately or as one. The earth shaped feature dividing the slopes (locally known as the knuckle) allows for a safe learning experience for the novice while doubling as an exciting feature for advanced and freestyle skiers.

Extensive landscaping around the slopes and on the approach to the new slopes was also carried out.

The project was completed on a short 4 month time-frame during the summer closed season for the Ski Club. The facility opened in September 2011 in time for the new season.

    Special Features

    • Crib-lock walls and gabbions were used to provide support to the re-graded slopes
    • The ski slope material used is layered to create a cushioned base for a safe learning experience and is anchored to the ground using specialist ground anchors
    • Two new electrically powered Sunkid travellator lifts were installed to service the slopes
    • The facility is floodlit to allow night-time operations
    • An integrated water lubrication system is used within the slopes to deliver a more enjoyable skiing experience
    • Power and water services were brought to the slope location and a new tank and pump installed to supply the lubrication system

    Gate Theatre

    Project Summary

The Gate Theatre is a protected structure and a landmark Dublin building within the grounds of the Rotunda Hospital.

This project involved a services installation to provide ventilation to the theatre auditorium. A new AHU was positioned on an inner roof to supply air to a newly created plenum under the theatre floor. The plenum was created by sealing three distinct void spaces below the floor. The auditorium floor was cut beneath the seats to discreetly fit new grilles and allow a gentle air flow from the plenum below.

The duct route was complex and travelled through very tight spaces above the Rotunda’s highly decorative Pillar Room and below the auditorium. Works took place in and around the public spaces and the theatre remained operational, with just one week closure to facilitate structural interventions for the duct route.

    Special Features

    • The programme of works was restricted allowing only a one week closure of the theatre. Works were ongoing around rehearsals, live shows and regular building usage.

    Project Summary

Situated on the Dublin/Wicklow border on the Enniskerry Road, the Ski Club of Ireland a.k.a. the National Snow Sports Centre has been bringing the sports of skiing and snowboarding to the Irish public for over 50 years.

In addition to its unrivalled skiing facility the Ski Club members sought to further improve their offering to the membership and the public with the provision of warm and welcoming multipurpose space with a view of the slope-based activities.

Constructed on sloping ground, the building’s main area is elevated to blend seamlessly with the levels of the existing office and ski dispense area. With windows wrapping the entire of the slope side elevations the views of the slope and surrounding landscape are given precedence.

    Special Features

    • This was an entirely new build however generations of buried service ducts, pipes and cables as well as the buildings location in the path of the mountain’s natural drainage course provided a challenge
    • Lissadell’s previous knowledge of the site helped to provide lasting solutions to these issues which have been a perennial challenge for the club
